Hidden rock formations in Namibia

Sesriem Canyon is 1 km long and 30 meters deep. It was formed by the Tsauchab river over a period of 2 million years. The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means "six belts", since the early settlers had to attach together six belts (made of oryx hides), in order to reach buckets down into the canyon to scoop up water. Since it is located in a desert it is rare that there is water in the bottom of the canyon. As a result it is possible to climb down into the canyon and walk around.

The Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa. Although small compared to canyons in North America it is still impressive. There are several treks down into the canyon but this requires permission with the park services.

The Hoba Meteorite

The Hoba Meteorite is about 1m thick and at about 3m long. It weights about 55 tons.

Giants Playground

It is only a short distance further on the road you drove in to the Garingas Quivertree forest. There are a lot of stones in this area, it actually looks like some giants have played with them, piled them up and made figures. There is a short round walk through these piles and fairy-landscape. There are of course also Quivertrees here, but they do not grow as a real forest.

Located in the Southern part of Namibia, Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world. With a depth of up to 550 metres in parts, the enormous gorge winds along a distance of approx. 160 kilometres through the fissured Koubis Massif all the way down to Ai-Ais. The canyon starts near Seeheim, is 161 kilometres long and ends at Ai-Ais.
The Fish River Hiking trail is one of the most famous hikes in Southern Africa. The hike covers a distance of just over 80km in the base of the canyon and takes over 5 days with absolutely no facilities whatsoever. To undertake the hike you should be in reasonable fitnees and obtain a hiking permit. In the summer (Nov to mid March) temperatures can reach some 50° Centigrade, resulting in the canyon being closed to the public for hiking during that time
Ais-Ais hot springs can be found within the Fish River Canyon conservation area. These sulphurous springs originate deep underground and are rich in minerals, which have been reported to be beneficial for those with rheumatic or nervous disorders. Ais-Ais hot springs are a public facility, attached to a resort that includes an indoor spa with Jacuzzi. The resort is closed from November to mid March

Beautiful sunsets in Namibia

I can't help being enchanted by sunsets. And African sunsets can't leave anyone indifferent. Vast skies, open spaces, vivid colours and these fleeting moments of natural transition that you want to keep in your memory for ever. You try to catch all the beauty and emotions that it evokes on a film, but of course it's a futile task.

In Namibia, there will be tonnes of places where everyone will insist you MUST base yourself to catch the perfect sun-rise / sun-set

Spectacular Wonders of Namibia

Namibia is home to spectacular wildlife encounters, beautiful deserts, and much more. Coastlines, mountains, deserts and more make Namibia a home to many wonders of nature with some that even competed as candidates for the 7 Natural Wonders of Africa. What are the best wonders of nature that Namibia has to offer, that is the question.

 Lake Otijikoto
Because of its depth, the lake has become a real challenge for scuba divers around the world. They have also discovered artillery, remnants from the First World War dumped into the water’s depths.

Epupa Falls
The falls is fed by the river of Kunene which drops into a series of waterfalls completely emphasized by the dry and rocky landscape. There are trees that line the surrounding area of the falls which reflect the tropical climate of the region such as palm trees, fig trees and baobab.

Fish River Canyon
Quite an odd name for a rocky canyon, the Fish River Canyon gets its name from the remnant of a river below the impressive canyon itself. What is left of the river are precious pools that only fill up entirely during heavy rains.

Damaraland
Bounded by the great deserts of Kalahari and Namib, Damaraland does not pale in comparison when it comes to scenic landscapes. One of the most highlighted sites in this region is the Petrified Forest. These are trees buried by sand and sediments only to be uncovered after millions of years.

Brandberg Mountain
Deserving recognition as one of natural wonders of Namibia, Brandberg Mountain is actually also located in the edges of Damaraland. It is the highest mountain of Namibia and is made from granite intrusions. Brandberg means “Fire Mountain” which originated from the blazing colours that splash the western face of the mountain when the sun sets. It is especially known for the ancient rock paintings in its ravines

Stay @ the 2nd Largest Canyon in the World >>>

The Fish River Lodge, on the edge of eternity!!!!!

Fish River Lodge was built in 2009 and designed by Namibian-born architect Andy Chase from the Windhoek-based architectural firm Stauch & Partners. The natural environment served both as stylistic reference as well inspiration for the colour palette. Even the trying entry road to the lodge mirrors the isolation of the lodge while the dry-packed stone wall that runs the length of the lodge guards the natural spectacle that awaits you.

20 private chalets are dotted along the edge of the canyon, flanking both sides of the main lodge. As with the main building, guests can soak up the enchanting views. The beds have been placed to allow guests a prime spot from which to gaze over the majestic canyon as the sun washes a kaleidoscope of colours over the landscape every morning.

Outdoor decks overlook the canyon
The additional outdoor showers takes you one step closer to nature
Large bathrooms with sufficient storage space to keep clutter out of the bedroom
Double basins
An outdoor platform allows for sleeping under the stars on warm nights and is ideal for yoga enthusiasts

Nature walks in Namibia

The walking in Namibia is fantastic - from gentle wanders to challenging hikes. Many camps are surrounded by superb walking trails to explore on your own or with an expert guide; some take a few hours, others last for days. Overall, we think Namibia is a top destination for walking in Africa.

A walk through the Namib's red desert dunes exposes one of the country's most stunning landscapes.

Some of the lodges for Walking in Namibia, Fish River Canyon Area...

Canyon Lodge

The harsh rocky desert region at the southern tip of Namibia has made travellers think that God has forgotten this land. Not so! Just 20 kilometres from the main viewpoint of the Fish River Canyon National Park, off the dusty D324, you’ll find the Cañon Lodge, an oasis seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Tall weather-beaten granite boulders mark the location of the lodge and form an integral part of the overall design.

The Cañon Roadhouse is located 20 kilometres from the main viewpoint of the Fish River Canyon. Coming from the north, it is the logical stop on your way to one of Namibia’s greatest natural wonders. The now fully completed and operational Roadhouse offers everything the weary traveller needs. The 24 individually decorated en-suite rooms are gathered around an inner courtyard, creating a feel of tranquil homeliness.

Fish River Lodge in southern Namibia is the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon offering guests breathtaking views of the canyon from sunrise to sunset. Experience first hand the geological forces that unfolded 300 million years ago when the Fish River began to etch its way through hard quartzite forming a canyon 90 kilometres long, 549 meters deep and 28 kilometres wide in some places, making it the second largest canyon in the world.

Namibia - A land of wonders

With well graded roads leading to uncrowded, magical landscapes from spectacular vast desert and the world’s highest sand dunes to national parks teeming with wildlife – Namibia is an adventure waiting to be explored.

Although the entire coastline of Namibia was formerly called The Skeleton Coast, more commonly today it refers only to the Skeleton Coast National Park. The park stretches from the Kunene River in the north for approximately 500km to the Ugab River in the south, and protects about one-third of Namibia's coastline

The Fish River Canyon in Namibia is (allegedly) the 2nd largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon. The immensity of this magnificent landscape is truly breathtaking. The towering rock faces and deep ravines were formed by water erosion and the collapse of the valley due to movements in the earth's crust over 500 million years ago. Today the canyon measures 160km long up to 27km wide and almost 550m at its deepest. It is fair to say that when you arrive at the canyon though, its exact location is a bit of a mystery as the 500m vertical drop from the flat dry plateau is completely out of view.

Etosha, meaning "Great White Place", is dominated by a massive mineral pan. The pan is part of the Kalahari Basin, the floor of which was formed around 1000 million years ago. The Etosha Pan covers around 25% of the National Park. The pan was originally a lake fed by the Kunene River. However the course of the river changed thousands of years ago and the lake dried up. The pan now is a large dusty depression of salt and dusty clay which fills only if the rains are heavy and even then only holds water for a short time. This temporary water in the Etosha Pan attracts thousands of wading birds including impressive flocks of flamingos. The perennial springs along the edges of the Etosha Pan draw large concentrations of wildlife and birds.

The sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert are often referred to as the highest dunes in the world. Various arguments are laid out to support this claim, but all miss the point, which is that Sossusvlei is surely one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. Located in the Namib Naukluft park, the largest conservation area in Africa, and fourth largest in the world - the sand dunes at Sossusvlei are just one excellent reason to visit Namibia. The best time to view Sossusvlei is close to sunrise and sunset; the colours are strong and constantly changing, allowing for wonderful photographic opportunities.

The Spitzkoppe (from German for "pointed dome"; also referred to as Spitzkop, Groot Spitzkop, or the "Matterhorn of Namibia"), is a group of bald granite peaks or bornhardts located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib desert of Namibia. The granite is more than 700 million years old and the highest outcrop rises about 1,784 metres (5,853 ft) above sea level. The peaks stand out dramatically from the flat surrounding plains. The highest peak is about 700 m (2,300 ft) above the floor of the desert below.

The Namib-Naukluft National Park is a national park of Namibia encompassing part of the Namib Desert (considered the world's oldest desert) and the Naukluft mountain range. With an overall area of 49,768 km2 (19,216 sq mi), the Namib-Naukluft is the largest game park in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. The most well-known area of the park is Sossusvlei, which is the main visitor attraction in Namibia. A surprising collection of creatures survives in the hyper-arid region, including snakes, geckos, unusual insects, hyenas, gemsboks and jackals. More moisture comes in as a fog off the Atlantic Ocean than falls as rain, with the average 106 millimeters of rainfall per year concentrated in the months of February and April.

Twyfelfontein (Afrikaans: uncertain spring), officially known as ǀUi-ǁAis (Damara/Nama: jumping waterhole), is a site of ancient rock engravings in the Kunene Region of north-western Namibia. It consists of a spring in a valley flanked by the slopes of a sandstone table mountain that receives very little rainfall and has a wide range of diurnal temperatures. The site has been inhabited for 6,000 years, first by hunter-gatherers and later by Khoikhoi herders. Both ethnic groups used it as a place of worship and a site to conduct shamanist rituals. In the process of these rituals at least 2,500 items of rock carvings have been created, as well as a few rock paintings.
