Sossusvlei

The top destination in the Southern Region is Sossusvlei with its monumental dunes, up to 325 m when measured from the base. These star-shaped dunes are a sought-after topic for artists and photographers. Sossusvlei is surely one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. Located in the Namib Naukluft park, the sand dunes at Sossusvlei are just one excellent reason to visit Namibia.

Sesriem Canyon

The canyon derives its name from the fact that early Afrikaner trekkers had to use six ('ses') leather thongs (a thong is a 'riem') so that their buckets could reach the water far below.The canyon begins as an almost imperceptible but nevertheless deep cleft in level, stony ground, and then widens until it finally flattens out onto the plain.

Climbing to the top of Big Mama, as it is known to the locals, is well worth every bead of sweat. Catch your breath, take a drink and try to avoid camera shake before capturing some unique moments

Hidden rock formations in Namibia

Sesriem Canyon 

Sesriem Canyon is 1 km long and 30 meters deep. It was formed by the Tsauchab river over a period of 2 million years.The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means "six belts", since the early settlers had to attach together six belts (made of oryx hides), in order to reach buckets down into the canyon to scoop up water. Since it is located in a desert it is rare that there is water in the bottom of the canyon. As a result it is possible to climb down into the canyon and walk around.

Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa. Although small compared to canyons in North America it is still impressive. There are several treks down into the canyon but this requires permission with the park services.

The Hoba Meteorite

The Hoba Meteorite is about 1m thick and at about 3m long. It weights about 55 tons.

Giants Playground
 

It is only a short distance further on the road you drove in to the Garingas Quivertree forest.There are a lot of stones in this area, it actually looks like some giants have played with them, piled them up and made figures.There is a short round walk through these piles and fairy-landscape. There are of course also Quivertrees here, but they do not grow as a real forest.

Unrivalled access to the red dunes of Sossusvlei

Family-friendly Kulala Desert Lodge is located within the arid Namib Desert on the 37 000-hectare private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. Comprising 23 thatched and canvas "kulalas" with en-suite bathrooms and verandas, each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes and has a deck on the flat rooftop for sleep-outs under the stars.
