The SanDune Lodge - Namibia

SanDüne Game Lodge is a 4600ha fenced game farm with more than 1000 animals & more than 13 species, situated in the Kalahari Forest area en-route to Botswana Buitepos Border Post. 

 Night game viewing is possible from this area, where herds of kudu, blue wildebeest, birds of pray, and small antelope harvest from the gardens.

Tsumkwe - Home of the San / Bushman

The small, spread-out settlement of Tsumkwe lies at the western margin of the Kalahari and is the district centre of former Bushman Land, today part of the Otjozondjupa region. The San, coloquially also called bushmen, live in this area. They are the oldest people in Namibia, living in southern Africa for an estimated 20,000 years. The South African Homeland policy restricted them to the remote "Bushmanland", a semi-desert area between Khaudum National Park and Omaheke. It can be accessed via the C44 road, which turns off the B8 north of Grootfontein. The distance to Tsumkwe is 250 km.

The San are masterly bow hunters. Their bow is relatively small and the range of the arrows is below 25 metres. Therefore the San need to get quite close to their prey, but the supple hunters are very skilled and good at that. If an animal has been hit by a poisoned arrow, it doesn't stand a chance to escape. The absolutely deadly arrow poison is made from the larvae of a certain beetle (diamphidia nigroornata). According to a traditional recipe, which is only known to the San, varous herbs are added to increase the deadly effect. A human being would also not have any chance to survive even the smallest amouunt of this poison in the blood stream, and no anti-dote exists.

 Traditionally the San had no leaders or chiefs, personal decisions were made individually and group decisions were left to the group. When times were good groups could swell to over one hundred people but during drought times groups might dwindle to family units of less than 10 people.

The Bahnhof Hotel was initially built in 1906 and had been in the hands of the Lubowski family since the late thirties. A fire destructed the hotel in 1948 and a brick construction replaced the wooden structure of earlier times. With different leaseholders the hotel experienced varying heydays, until in 2005 a group of five partners took over the business. The building was given a complete makeover and 13 stylish rooms with modern en suite amenities were the results of these efforts. In 2010 another 8 rooms were added...

The Fish River Lodge, on the edge of eternity!!!!!

Fish River Lodge was built in 2009 and designed by Namibian-born architect Andy Chase from the Windhoek-based architectural firm Stauch & Partners. The natural environment served both as stylistic reference as well inspiration for the colour palette. Even the trying entry road to the lodge mirrors the isolation of the lodge while the dry-packed stone wall that runs the length of the lodge guards the natural spectacle that awaits you.

 

20 private chalets are dotted along the edge of the canyon, flanking both sides of the main lodge. As with the main building, guests can soak up the enchanting views. The beds have been placed to allow guests a prime spot from which to gaze over the majestic canyon as the sun washes a kaleidoscope of colours over the landscape every morning.

Nestled on a rock terrace high up on the slope of Waterberg, the chalets of Waterberg Plateau Lodge afford grand vistas of the endless Kalahari bush savannah below. Canyon Lodge

The harsh rocky desert region at the southern tip of Namibia has made travellers think that God has forgotten this land. Not so! Just 20 kilometres from the main viewpoint of the Fish River Canyon National Park, off the dusty D324, you’ll find the Cañon Lodge, an oasis seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Tall weather-beaten granite boulders mark the location of the lodge and form an integral part of the overall design.

Canyon Roadhouse

The Cañon Roadhouse is located 20 kilometres from the main viewpoint of the Fish River Canyon. Coming from the north, it is the logical stop on your way to one of Namibia’s greatest natural wonders. The now fully completed and operational Roadhouse offers everything the weary traveller needs. The 24 individually decorated en-suite rooms are gathered around an inner courtyard, creating a feel of tranquil homeliness. 

Fish River Lodge

Fish River Lodge in southern Namibia is the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon offering guests breathtaking views of the canyon from sunrise to sunset. Experience first hand the geological forces that unfolded 300 million years ago when the Fish River began to etch its way through hard quartzite forming a canyon 90 kilometres long, 549 meters deep and 28 kilometres wide in some places, making it the second largest canyon in the world.

Breathtaking - Twyfelfontein Country Lodge Namibia

The Twyfelfontein Country Lodge is located in the Huab valley in Namibia’s Kunene region (formerly known as Damaraland). The area, known as the Twyfelfontein Uibasen Conservancy, boasts various rock engravings and paintings. These are a silent testimony to the first hunter-gatherer and subsequent Khoi-San inhabitants of 6 000 years ago, who used the area as a place of worship and shaman rituals. There are 17 different sites of rock paintings, totalling 212 stone slabs.

 

The developers of the lodge used natural stone and thatch and chose paint hues to match that of the surrounding rocks and plains. Recently a visitor centre was erected and was also built and designed to blend into the red sandstone of the environment. Twyfelfontein welcomes as many as 40 000 visitors per year. For those puzzled by the name: a farmer that settled on the land in 1946 named it Twyfelfontein (Afrikaans for uncertain or doubtful spring) as he was unsure whether the spring called /Ui-//aes on the farm would provide enough water.

Guest accommodation comprises 56 en-suite double rooms, a lounge, open dining room and a bar where you can swop stories with fellow visitors. The lodge caters for a host of activities, ranging from swimming facilities, cycling the area or on guided nature walks and safaris. The many Namibian plant species, among which the unique Welwitschia, will delight plant lovers. Elephants, rhinoceros and giraffe are some of the wildlife that adapted to the desert climate of the Namib that can be seen roaming the area.

 

Those interested in geology will also be in for a treat: volcanic activity of eons ago led to spectacular rock formations that can be viewed at the Organ Pipes, Burnt Mountains, Doros Crater and Petrified Forest. They are all in the vicinity of the lodge.

Twyfelfontein Country Lodge is approximately 100 km west of Khorixas and 430 km northwest of the Namibian capital, Windhoek. It can be reached by air or by road (travel along the C39, turn off at D2612, join D3254).

Oranjemund and OP MY STOEP is surrounded by the magnificent Namib desert and therefore is home to many wild animals, such as Gemsbok (Oryx Gazelle), Jackals, Springbuck, Ostrich and even Strand wolf (brown Hyena).  The Gemsbok and Jackals actually walk around in town, as there are ample sources of food and water.  The newly born babies are kept safe and protected in the parks and gardens of this green oasis town.

This homely, yet luxurious lodge offers 16 rooms, of which there are 9 single rooms, 3 double rooms, 4 NEW double VIP rooms with luxury en-suite's which feature a spacious shower and corner bath.  There are 4 self-catering units of which 2 accommodate 3 persons and 2 accommodate 4 persons.  A caravan park, with 6 stands, each with its own ablution and braai facilities, is also available for those adventurer types. 

Each room is furnished with hand-made beds, bedside tables, lamps, light fixtures, tables and chairs, even the coat-hangers are custom made, by Fanie.  All rooms are equipped with all necessities, such as 14 channel DSTV, air conditioning, under-roof secure parking, kettle, fridge, coffee/tea/sugar and home-made rusks, freshly made by Fanie's wife, Ria – the Lady of the Lodge and great dessert, cake and pudding maker.

Omaruru - Namibia

Small town Omaruru is located 50 km from town Karibib and 230 km from Windhoek, the capital of the country. Set in the heart of game-farm area the town is surrounded by array of mountains with the most prominent, the Oruwe, located southeast of town. Kristall Kellerei, the only winery in the country, is located in Omaruru. The name Omaruru is derived from Herero omaere omaruru meaning "bitter curd" which is apparently how the cattle's milk tested after eating particular bush growing in the area around tow. The first European to reach the area was Hugo Hahn, the missionary who visited it in 1851. In 1868 Herero Chief Zeraua settled in Omaruru although "officially" the town was founded only in 1870 with an arrival of another missionary, Gottlieb Viehe. Famous explorer Charles Anderson, being attracted by plentiful game in the area, established a hunting camp on the banks of Omaruru River in 1858. In 1870, the hunter Axel Eriksson and brewer Anders Ohissen formed a partnership to exploit the game and by 1880 they had succeeded in wiping out all the elephant, rhino, lion and giraffe once living in the area. in 1880s Omaruru was repeatedly attacked in Herero-Nama wars before peace was secured in 1889. The German garrison was stationed here in 1894, the town began to grow since then. The first postal office was opened in 1895. The garrison moved to a new fort, today's magistrate's court. By the end of 1896 Omaruru had the largest population of European settlers in Namibia. The town was besieged in 1904 during the Herero uprising. The military commander at the time, Captain Franke, was away in the south helping to put down the Bondelswart uprising. He marched 900 km in 20 days and broke the siege by leading a cavalry charge and defeating Hereros. Franke's Tower was built in 1907 to commemorate the event. Omaruru received full municipal status in 1909.
