FUN FACTS ABOUT THE ZAMBEZI RIVER

DID YOU KNOW?

Zambezi River means the “Great River” in the local Tonga dialect

  • The Zambezi  is the fourth longest river in Africa, after the Nile, Congo, and Niger Rivers.
  •  It is the longest east flowing river in Africa.
  • It flows through six countries on its journey from its source in north-western Zambia to the Indian Ocean, an amazing 2 700 km.
  • This river evokes mystery and excitement with few rivers in the world remaining as pristine or as little explored.
  • The source of the mighty Zambezi River lies at about 1 500 m (4 900ft) above sea level in the Mwinilunga District, very close to the border where Zambia, Angola and the Congo meet.
  • From there it flows through Zambia, Angola, Namibia and Botswana then back along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe finally discharging into the Indian Ocean at its delta in Mozambique. The area of its catchment basin is 1 390 000 square km which is half that of the Nile.

The river can be divided into three section :
  • THE UPPER ZAMBEZI
  • THE LOWER ZAMBEZI
  • THE ZAMBEZI DELTA
The Zambezi River provides visitors of some of the best of Africa, including its scenery, wildlife, water sports and water falls.

New Pioneers Camp in Zimbabwe

Wild Frontiers Zimbabwe has announced that Pioneers Camp, a new luxury camp on the Zambezi River, is now open.
The camp is situated 17 kilometres from Victoria Falls inside the Upper Zambezi National park.

It has 1.5 kilometres of river frontage and currently hosts three tents.  A further three are expected to be completed by the end of this month.  The tents are en-suite with flush toilets and solar powered geysers and lighting.
The camp also hosts a central lounge and dining.
This new permanent tented camp is located inside the park, on a peacefully quiet stretch of shoreline with a natural spring-line through the site.  This water source attracts an abundance of wildlife throughout the year, making for fabulous game viewing opportunities right at the camp.

Activities include:
Game drives,
Boat cruises,
Canoeing,
Walking and fishing in the park.

The camp also offers a daily shuttle into town for activities.

A slight change done to the Ultimate Kalahari, Okavango Delta & Vic Falls Safari

The Tour "Ultimate Kalahari Kalahari, Okavango Delta & Vic Falls Safari" has had to change one establishment in their tour.
Due to the unexpected closure of Monkey Island in the Okavango Delta, they have been forced to replace Monkey Island with an alternative property. We are delighted to announce that they have been able to include Nxamaseri Island Lodge.
This change does not affect the price for the 2011 season.
